As a Lorettonian the LGA is only the start of your golfing journey! Once you have completed your schooling you can join the Old Lorettonian Golfing Society
The Society’s aim is to provide a range of golfing events for Old Lorettonians to enjoy. These range from our Scratch team playing in prestigious national competitions such as the Halford Hewitt, to high handicap players being able to participate in friendly but competitive competitions and matches against other golf societies. The term ‘serious fun’ as a description of what golf can offer was coined some hundred years ago but it very much sums up the Society’s approach to all its events whether they are elite scratch competitions, or friendly handicap matches.
For many younger members in particular who are unable for whatever reason to join a golf club, the Society offers affordable access to golf. We are privileged to have fixtures at many prestigious courses such as Muirfield and Prestwick in Scotland and Worplesdon, West Sussex, Liphook and Denham in the south-east of England. Participating in Society matches is a good way of not only playing at these clubs, but also of meeting other club members – many OLGS members have subsequently joined these clubs.
While the proudest moment of Loretto’s golfing heritage is undoubtebly winning the 2021 Halford Hewitt tournament, then successfully defending in 2022 and 2023, the school has supplied a number of Captains of the R&A, countless R&A committee members and the Society was closely involved with the set up and fund raising for the Loretto Golf Academy. The links between the Society and the Academy continue to flourish as the Academy’s graduates go on to form the backbone of the extremely talented Scratch Team taking part in not just the Hewitt but other events such as the Queen Elizabeth Trophy, the Stenhouse Quaich and the Grafton Morrish.
All leavers can enrol into the Society for free until the age of 30. All Society members under 30 receive heavy discounts on all golf events. The annual subscription is just £50.
If you are interested in joining the society please email golfacademy@loretto.com.
We spoke to some of our OLG’s about their time at Loretto, their weekly schedules, how they juggled golf with their studies, how the Academy helped them develop their golf, prepared them for University and beyond.
